First things first, let me set the scene.
It’s Monday; we’re back to only having one staff member, so Gemma and I are taking turns working Mondays for the time being until we’ve sorted out some new staff… which basically means I’m footloose on my own for the day! After last week’s busy-ness and feeling a little rundown, I decided to go back home after dropping Gem off at work and having breakfast together, and have a long read nested on my bed. I’m so close to finishing my book club read for the month and I’m excited to know the ending now!
That was this morning, and now I’ve come into Northwich town centre as I needed to bank the Macmillan Bake Off Event money we raised.
Banking done… where am I now? Well, I’m currently doing something I’ve had in mind to do for AGES, and I’ve come to a coffee shop in Northwich, and I’ve brought my laptop, to write, out of the house. Just to you know, see if it works and I’m remotely inspired outside of my house parameters, because that could be a nice cosy hobby to get into. Writing, out the house, and enjoying a little people watching alongside doing something here on this blog which I wish to create for so much.
So I’m currently sat in a Costa, which pains me slightly to type, because as much as we go out to tonnes of other cafes, coffee shops and restaurants, I very very rarely come to a chain coffee shop. Owning, running and working in my own independent café business makes you really understand and desire to line small business pockets instead of the big boys. But, I’ve allowed myself to come here for the first time, because it’s the Costa that’s part of a new development here in Northwich, and I’ve got myself a river view, a relatively empty seating area, wifi, and frankly, it’s just v suitable for what I was after.
My simple setting the scene rambled on right? That part aside, I do feel inspired to write just by sitting here.
Well, about Northwich.
The town where I live. The town I moved to nearly five years ago to move in with Gemma from my previous rented abode in city centre Manchester. She very kindly and conveniently bought a house back in 2002, when a mortgage was a much easier affair to deal with and get, and the deposit was almost peanuts (our low mortgage certainly took the pressure off me jacking in the day job and opening a café with her!)!
Our house isn’t big, or fancy, but it is everything I could want. We’re in the middle of Cheshire, a beautiful county with lots to offer, but Northwich town itself, once may have been a thriving market town with lots of life and lots to offer, but in more recent years, very specifically around the time I moved here, it was not somewhere that drew you in. It still doesn’t to be brutal.
I come into Northwich fairly often to do banking and pop to Boots, but I don’t ever come here for extended shopping, or to go out in the evening. Hell, I don’t even come to any of the cafes here as I’m always at my own in the week in the little town of Middlewich five miles south of here, and come Sunday we tend to go further afield.
I always do down this town I live in, which is in part deserving I guess, because a lot of it has been empty a while, there’s a less than loved old market area, and a lot of the shops do nothing for me. The beauty of the black and white period buildings is often boarded up, and the natural features have mostly, until now, not been readily accessible to people walking through the town centre. Add to this that within the centre there are no places I’d choose over other places outside of Northwich that we frequent regularly, to go out for drinks or food! I’m not into chain restaurants much either, but again I’d rather there were some on offer here to offer up some atmosphere, and there is just one, which only opened in January.
I’m happy to live here, because I love our house, and we do have LOTS of awesome places within easy driving reach, or even train, and we’re very well situated in terms of work. And there’s also the fact that both of us being self-employed, really doesn’t work out well when you ask the bank about a mortgage to buy a house somewhere else – we know that as we’ve been through that fun process already!
However, having had a wander right through Northwich town centre, today, I’ve spotted the few places I’ve heard have opened, and I can see that they look appealing!
There’s a funky looking real ale/music/comedy bar, a Turkish restaurant with a nice looking menu, and this place I’m currently sat, might be a Costa, but the view is good, there’s canal boats travelling up and down the river weaver, and there’s a nice atmosphere to sit and write in.
So, I’m going to stop with berating the town centre so heavily and make an effort to find out what these new places have to offer and what random events of interest might be going on, rather than just assuming there aren’t any. I’m going to try and make one of the comedy nights? And come and spend some cash in the independent Turkish restaurant.
And maybe, try sitting in this spot again, as it’s pleasant change of scene, and makes for a good excuse to do some concentrated writing!
Do you love where you live, or do you have to venture further to find the places/activities you want?
