I've just re-read the original Upcoming Trips post I wrote back in March, and in a similar vain as to how that started - can you believe we're galloping head long into mid September? Into Autumn? Into that metaphorical downhill slide to the 31st December... this weekend I wore TIGHTS, and some real shoes with laces, y'know rather than the open toe flip flops I've been wearing every day since May.
I'd obviously had bigger plans back in March when I wrote that to enjoy more weekends away camping this summer which, unfortunately, due to needing to work and be at our cafe did not happen. This stuff happens, and owning a business *sometimes* needs to take priority.
Anyway. Autumn. I like Autumn, and all of this time of year really. Gemma and I both have birthdays in autumn, I love the cosiness of the season, and as mentioned after a summer of no-staff, the less intense work period is easing up and we've managed to book in a few little trips away!
JERSEY - THIS WEEKEND
My mum turned 60 a week ago, and we celebrated with family in a cottage for the weekend. It was great fun, and this weekend coming the fun shall continue I hope on a girls trip to Jersey!
We're staying in what looks like a gorgeous hotel in the centre of St Helier, and my mum's best friend, who started her career in tourism as a tour rep on the island, has set the itinerary for us. It will be lovely to do a little sight seeing and indulge in lots of the finer parts of life, with someone else taking the lead of where and when!
BERLIN - EARLY NOVEMBER
I've been fancying a trip to Berlin for a while. Blame it on people I follow on insta, and an insatiable love of reading Lonely Planet mags. I visited the German capital years ago, like nearly a decade ago in early 2008, with an old friend, and really want to go and rediscover the city and make some new, fresh memories, with Gemma.
So after what felt like a logic puzzle, looking at budget flights, to Manchester or Liverpool, I managed to score us some mega cheap return flights, heading there for three nights over my birthday!
I have yet to book a hotel - if you have any suggestions please let me know!!?? I am not averse to airbnb usually, but I know Berlin has loads of awesome independent hotels at great prices so I'm after a hotel this time I think.
I am wanting to do a little traditional sight-seeing, and my friend's husband who is a teacher has run a school trip to Berlin for years and is kindly sharing his itinerary with me! But I'm also fancying a fun night out for my birthday, and maybe cocktails up the TV Tower.
If anyone has any *must-do's* they wanna share I'm all ears!
COPENHAGEN - LATE NOVEMBER
Gem's sister lives in Copenhagen, and has done the whole time we've been together, yet we've only been to stay and visit once. I knew this year that needed to be rectified! We went near as dammit the same weekend we're booked to go this year but back in 2013, and I'm really looking forward to a swift trip there and we're going with two friends!
We'll be staying in Gem's sisters apartment just outside of the centre and as we're going with friends who've not been before we'll likely hit up some of the tourist spots in a similar fashion to our previous trip!
I'm really excited for our little visit though, as I have since read a few books about Denmark, and what it means to be Danish, and about the illusive term 'hygge', that is hopefully going to be experienced in every moment we're there at that time of year!
As I wrote in my upcoming trips #1 post, I would still love to squeeze in an Edinburgh or London trip this year... but I've been lax to book any trains AS YET. Maybe that could be a job for me this week? I'd love to go to one, or the other, in December, even if it's just for one night.
And finally, we usually take our bigger holiday of the year between Christmas and New Year, reaching into the first weeks in January, as our cafe is shut over that time, and it makes sense to get away whilst there's no staffing stress. However, we may have some work going on over that time now, so we're a little in limbo on booking anything until we know exactly what's going on better. But, that will just have to be a wait and see one...
Do you love taking longer or shorter trips? And, is autumn your favourite season too?
