I'm currently at home, sat at my dining table, with a candle burning beside me, a star shaped lamp on in the corner, and wearing some seriously comfortable leisure wear. I'm drinking a pint of diet coke, and giving my liver a break after pretty much only consuming a drink with an alcohol content for the past 48 hours.
You see, I've been away for a fleeting 48 hour trip, having a great fun, family filled weekend in the middle of nowhere, celebrating my mother's 60th birthday which was yesterday!! I got to spend a whole weekend along with Gem with my mum and stepdad, my brother, sister in law and beautiful baby niece, and my aunts and uncles and grandmother and cousins.
We had rented a "cottage" in mid Wales for the weekend; I'm speech marking "cottage" because, personally, I think if somewhere has more bathrooms than days in the week, sleeps 24, has a hot tub we had 13 in at one point, and two humongous living rooms, it's not really a cottage is it - it's a bloody big barn conversion!
It was a beautiful place, and we had a really fab weekend!
Gemma and I arrived late noon on Saturday (a day later than most due to needing to work on Saturday morning!). We had games in the garden, and lots of glasses of fizz. Lots of lovely food, and puddings, followed by BIRTHDAY CAKE, which we had made and taken along!
The evening then continued in the usual family party fashion, lots of chatting and too much drinking. An impromptu disco, with lights and surprise disco fancy dress. And then came the suggestion to get in the hot tub. There were loads of us in, and it was a very cosy squidge in with all my aunts, uncles, brother, and cousins...
The sloe gin I had decanted about 6 months late got taken along and drank between us all in one fell swoop, and so did god knows how many other bottles of wine, gin, fizz...
A slowish start, lots of communal breakfast activity, and big hugs all round to my mum on her birthday! The previous days good weather had totally departed and it rained all day long. This didn't deter a lovely relaxed day though. Breakfast and more easy time together, hot tub time again but a lot more sober this time! We had my 86 y o grandmother in there too which was ace!
Then we had somehow come round to late noon, and dinner prep was underway. I made the slowest guac and salsa I've ever made. I don't wanna blame equipment, but seriously, shit kitchen knives - ugh. Life is TOO short to own shit kitchen knives!
We ate brazilan beef and beans with all the fun sides. My aunt had made what felt like a 27 ingredient trifle, and after we were all full to the brim, we settled down to watch Little Miss Sunshine - great film!
Lots more champagne and sofa time. I was asking all my family about their morning and evening home habits, and I realised I love finding out that kinda everyday shit about people! Is that weird?
Later, when we were all warm, and dozy from a mega cosy day, we all one by one tailed off to bed.
What a wonderful weekend, I won't forget, as this marks my mum's big 6-0 birthday!
But thankfully, the celebrations ain't over yet, as we're off to Jersey in a fortnight for more girly celebrations!
